Calligraphy
Certificate, ink on paper, "Birth of Matthew Lomas," Staffordshire
, England , 1826
Sight size: 4½” x 6¼”

This fine calligraphic work was done by an unknown artist, most likely a relative or dear friend of the family, to commemorate the birth of Matthew Lomas on May 1 st , 1826 . A well-wishing statement, “Long may you live and happy die, May prosperity ever attend you,” appears along with the name of the village, Reaps Moor, Staffordshire. Scrolling lines transformed into flowers and other decorative details surround the lettering, with the heads and wings of four curly-haired angels penned into the corners.
Matthew Lomas was christened on May 29, 1826 , the son of Richard and Hannah Lomas, of Staffordshire. Census records indicate that at the age of 54 Matthew was a tailor and that he lived on his younger brother Noah’s farm along with their older brother John, a boot maker.
Worked in pen and ink on paper this calligraphy remains in excellent condition and has been placed in a black painted frame with a gold liner.
