American samplers with large houses and lawn scenes have long been considered been desirable, and this sampler by Sarah Elizabeth Bannister is a fine example. She notes that her sampler was "worked in the eighth year of her age," meaning that she was just seven years old when she stitched this remarkable piece. This handsome and detailed house was rendered with a stone façade, a pitched roof and a widow's walk nested between two chimneys. A pleasing aesthetic is found in that the same fully-worked pattern was used for both the widow's walk and the fence running along the lawn. Large stylized trees flank the house.
A floral vine divides the scene from a verse amid overstuffed baskets. Each capital letter of the verse has been delicately worked in a four-sided stitch. Two decorative borders frame her sampler; another zigzagging floral vine creates the inner frame with an undulating linear border as the exterior.
Worked in silk on linen this sampler is in very good condition with one secured area of weakness. It has been conservation mounted and is in a molded and black painted frame.
