Daughter of Richard and Jane Blackburn, Agness was born September 13, 1827, as she reveals on her sampler, and likely made this visually pleasing, pictorial sampler when she was about ten years old. Records indicate that Agness resided in Preston, Lancashire, England. Preston came to be known for its cotton and flax mills, brass and iron foundries and various manufacturing plants of engines, steam-boilers and the like. Located on a crossway of railroads, as well as at the southern end of the Lancaster Canal and the northern end of the Ribble River, the town remained a thriving one.
Worked in a palette of assorted greens and muted browns, Miss Blackburn created an array of motifs; and in the English tradition, a symmetrical composition. A handsome band of abstracted strawberries and fully worked blocks divide the alphabet and numbers from the imagery. Amongst the flowering plants are lions, birds, a large butterfly and a ship. Along the ground is a castle with three flags and a shepherdess. A brighter green vine with pink berries borders the sampler on all four sides.
Worked in silk on linen the sampler is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted into a Hogarth-style period frame.
