Marian Diamond was born and christened late October 1801 to William M. Diamond and Rebecca (Wendell) Diamond in Albany, New York. She was the second of four children, and although records show her name as "Mary Ann" we do know that the two names were used interchangeably, and we are certain to have found our samplermaker. The family was of Dutch descent and Marian was christened at the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany. She married a carpenter named Jacob Winne, also Dutch, and 1850 records indicate that they remained in Albany with a daughter, Elida.
When Marian was ten years old she worked her sampler; and dates her sampler May 6th 1811 in her inscription. Although quite hard to read, Miss Diamond inscribes her sampler after her alphabets, "Marian Diamond Her Work Albany May 6th 1811." She then inscribes one of the commonly used, yet most charming, verses found on samplers of that time: "This I have Done / To Let you See / What Care my Parents / Took of me / I'll Show to Others / Of my Age / What Busy Hands / Can Do."
A muted scene with a house grounds the work. The house, with a bird perched atop it, is flanked by baskets of flowers, with a band of baskets of flowers worked above it. Small geometric motifs are dispersed throughout the imagery. A floral vine was worked as a border on the top and bottom, and flowers without the vine frame the sampler along the sides.
Worked in silk on linen the sampler is in good condition with some weakening and minor fading throughout. It has been conservation mounted in a black painted and molded frame.
