Huldah M. LaRue was born in 1825 in the small town of Polkville, near the northwestern corner of New Jersey. In 1854, at age 29 and still a single lady, she worked this delightful depiction of a basket of flowers surrounded by stylish blossoms on stems and branches. This type of needlework picture would have been very much in vogue at that time, as classic schoolgirl samplers with alphabets and poems were declining in popularity and other forms of decorative needlework were on the rise.

Most interestingly, Huldah was a professional dressmaker by 1860, when she appears in the census living in Polkville. Her stated occupation then, at age 35, was "mantuamaker" which is the early term for dressmaker. Sometime after 1860 and prior to 1870 Huldah married a farmer and widower, William Mackey from the nearby town of Oxford.

The sampler is worked in wool on linen and remains in excellent condition with very slight loss. It has been conservation mounted into period walnut frame with a gilt inner liner.
