Memorial watercolor, Maine, circa 1830
Price: $425, Sight size: 4" x 6"

Along with silk embroideries and samplers, many schoolgirls used watercolor on paper for memorials. In this case, two handsome neoclassical monuments are draped with garlands of large blossomed roses; all of it was accomplished with stencils which created excellent shading.
This generic little watercolor resembles others that were made in Portland , Maine where there existed a strong tradition of schoolgirl embroideries. It may have been part of an album of watercolors at one time.
Worked in watercolor on paper, it is in excellent condition and is now framed in a 19 th century gold leaf frame.
